Match Facts |
India's AFC Asian Cup Qualification 2023 Campaign vs Cambodia kicks off on Wednesday. The Blue Tigers are set to face Cambodia in the first of three qualifying matches in their group. It will also mark Igor Stimak's team's first match in India in nearly three years - their first match since their 1-1 draw against Bangladesh in October 2019.
Steamk's team has high expectations for qualifying. To keep the predictions that the group will succeed in the right direction, they need to start strong. Cambodia may be ranked 171st in the FIFA world rankings, but there are no pushovers at this level. India must reach their best table to conquer Cambodia. A win can be the best stimulus they need to lead the group, but a point drop can create unnecessary obstacles in their qualifying journey.
India come into the game after playing 15 consecutive matches at home or in neutral venues. The COVID-19 Pandemic prevented any international matches from taking place, but under normal circumstances India would be able to play on the home turf again.
They will play at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata - in which they played their last home game - a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh. Similarly, they face a team that is ranked lower than them in the FIFA rankings. Cambodia has qualified for the AFC Asian Cup only once in its more than 60 - year history. That was 50 years ago in the 1972 edition, when they came in fourth! Since then, they have never crossed the qualifying round.
In fact, all of their major successes date back to the early 1970s. They won the Korean President's Cup in 1973 and the South Vietnam Independence Cup in 1972. Their record against India does not look great either. The Angkor Warriors have played five times against India, losing four and winning once.
India possible starting lineup:
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (GK), Pritam Kotal, Sandesh Jhingan, Anwar Ali, Subhasish Bose; Suresh Singh, Anirudh Thapa, Sahal Abdul Samad; Manvir Singh, Liston Colaco; Sunil Chhetri (C).
Cambodia possible starting lineup:
Keo Soksela (GK); Boris Kok, Tes Sambath, Soeuy Visal (C), Ken Chansopheak; Thierry Bin, Orn Chanpolin, Sos Suhana; Mat Noron, Keo Sokpheng; Sieng Chanthea.
