The first trophy of the French football season is Sunday when Paris Saint-Germain take on Nantes in the Trophy des Champions at Tel Aviv's Bloomfield Stadium.

Les Parisians stormed to the Ligue 1 title in the 2021-22 season, but Nantes marked their rise from the doldrums with Coupe de France glory. Even a Ligue 1 title couldn't save Mauricio Pochettino's bacon at the Parc des Princes, and despite ending Lille's brief dominance at the top of the French game, the trigger-happy board gave the Argentine his marching orders.
After failing in their attempts to bring Zinedine Zidane to the club, PSG opted to hire the man who won the 2020-21 Ligue 1 title with Lille, and Christophe Gaultier's impact was immediately felt in the hotseat. Former Nice and Saint-Etienne head coach Galtier has been experimenting with a 3-4-1-2 setup in pre-season in PSG's bid for a humiliating Champions League exit, along with Les Parisians' star-studded attack. Has enjoyed the new system so far with 13 goals in four pre-season games. The arrivals of Nordi Mukiele, Hugo Ekitike and Vitinha suggest that new football mentor Luis Campos is already planning for the future and winning an eighth Trophy des Champions since 2013 would be the perfect way for Galtier to start his PSG career.
Nantes head coach Antoine Combauer has already been there and done it all before in the PSG dugout, but the former Parisians boss is currently making waves with Nantes, adding the 2021-22 Coupe de France to their trophy collection last term. After Nice ended PSG's title defense, Nantes managed to get the better of Galtier's Aiglons in the final as Ludovic Blass's 47th-minute penalty led Les Canaries to victory at the Stade de France.
At the end of the 2020-21 season, Nantes were forced to defend their Ligue 1 status in the promotion/relegation playoffs, but last term, Combauer steadied the ship and guided his outfit to ninth place in the top flight. Their Coupe de France title also earned them a spot in the Europa League.
Les Canaries have just two Trophée des Champions wins, winning the 1999 and 2001 editions, with Nantes losing to Guingamp and Rennes while beating Caen and Lorient. Also, Nantes have proved a bogey team for PSG in recent times as Les Canaries have won two of their last three Ligue 1 encounters with the reigning champions, but Gaultier will be out for personal revenge after Combover got an over. He in the Coupe de France last year.
