Match Facts |
Argentina welcome Panama to Buenos Aires on Friday for their first match since winning the World Cup late last year.
A capacity crowd of 83,000 fans will be seen at El Monumental despite more than 1.5 million supporters trying to buy tickets to see the South American giants in action. Argentina were crowned World Cup champions for the first time in 36 years after coming out on top in an all-time classic against former holders France, following a thrilling contest that concluded Qatar's 2022 tournament in style. In a showpiece event that saw Kylian Mbappe score a World Cup Final hat-trick to force the match into penalties after a 3-3 draw after 120 minutes, Lionel Messi and co had the last laugh as they won 4-2. In the shootout to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Diego Maradona who lifted the biggest prize in world football in 1986.
Lionel Scaloni - the youngest manager (44) at the 2022 World Cup - was the architect behind Argentina's road to glory, and has since been awarded a new contract until 2026 and the 2022 FIFA Men's Coach of the Year award.
With Argentina not starting their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign until September, Scaloni's side will be back in action this month with two international friendlies against Panama and Curacao, the first on Friday and the second four days later.
La Albiceleste, second behind Brazil in the FIFA world rankings despite winning the World Cup, have faced Panama twice, including a 3-1 friendly win in May 2009 and a comfortable 5-0 victory in the Copa America. Messi scored a second-half hat-trick in the group stage in June 2016. Having lost just one of their last 44 internationals in all competitions since the summer of 2019 - a shock 2-1 group stage loss to Saudi Arabia at the World Cup - Argentina are confident of starting 2023 on a winning note. over Panama in front of a jubilant home crowd on Friday. After ending their campaign with a 1-0 win over table-toppers Canada, Los Canaleros have won just three of their last 10 games in all competitions, although two of those wins came in the CONCACAF Nations League against Costa Rica and Martinique.
Panama, managed by former Leeds United boss Thomas Christensen - top Group B - can finish the group stage unbeaten with a win over Costa Rica next Wednesday, but they must first focus on Friday's friendly with Argentina. However, Christensen opted to select an experienced 20-man squad consisting primarily of players based in the Panama First Division, and the 50-year-old will not feature in the match at El Monumental as he prepares the senior team. They will face Costa Rica next week.
